Our First Construction Project

Past Projects

In 2003 with a groundbreaking ceremony Habitat for Humanity Bulgaria started its first construction project in the neighborhood of Slatina in Sofia. The project was an eight-unit apartment building which was completed in 2005. The eight families were selected by HFH Bulgaria among fifty applicants in need.

The eight families worked hard along with volunteers from Habitat Global Village, the Peace Corps, the American University in Bulgaria, Habitat For Humanity Romania, Youth With Mission, and the International

Women's Club of Sofia, helping to build their long-awaited homes

Renovation Programs

In September 2005 HFH Bulgaria partnered with the Bulgarian Fund for Women to launch its first renovation program which provided home renovations for single mothers. As the program grew, HFH Bulgaria expanded it to include a variety of families in need and it was no longer gender specific.

Past Projects

These renovation programs offered a hand up instead of a hand out to those who wanted to improve their housing conditions where HFH Bulgaria provided financing and construction support for the home renovations. All of our programs, including the renovation ones, provide the needed financial resources to our beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will re-pay the amount borrowed for renovation as a long-term affordable loan. These monthly installments then go to the revolving fund to serve the next family in need and subsequent beneficiaries. Until June 2008 the Foundation had completed 24 renovations in Sofia and Varna, serving the families of single mothers, sight-impaired individuals, pensioners, large families. This program has now evolved into our Housing Microfinance Program as referenced in the Current Projects section
